2012 New Theatre at JCube
Singaporeans are taking to IMAX as the movie experience of choice
  • Shaw Theatres opens Singapore’s second digital IMAX theatre at JCube, Jurong East
29 March 2012, Singapore - The decision to bring IMAX into Singapore has paid off for Shaw Theatres. Its first digital IMAX theatre system at Shaw Theatres Lido, increased box office takings by about 50% in its first 6 months of operation for the multiplex (after re-opening in May 2011). This has prompted the company to bring forward plans to introduce a second IMAX theatre by including IMAX in its newest multiplex, Shaw Theatres JCube.

Shaw Theatres JCube will open on 5 April 2012 with 7 screens, including an IMAX theatre, and bring Hollywood blockbusters and quality entertainment right to the doorsteps of residents in the west of Singapore.

Mr. Mark Shaw, Executive Vice President of Operations, Shaw Theatres, said: “We did not expect to introduce another digital IMAX theatre so quickly, but the success of Lido’s IMAX theatre convinced us to accelerate our plans.

Hence the opening of our second theatre within 11 months of our first foray into IMAX!”

“Having now experienced the superior IMAX platform, our patrons see the value in paying a premium for experiencing their favourite blockbusters in the most immersive cinema format available. Shaw Theatres’ IMAX has been operating at full capacity for the first two to three weeks of any blockbuster movie release.”

Shaw Theatres expands its presence in Singapore
Shaw Theatres JCube will increase the number of multiplexes managed by the exhibitor from 6 to 7 locations island-wide. The new multiplex is the latest in a string of significant developments over the last two years for Shaw Theatres. The iconic Lido reopened in May 2011 following a S$20 million overhaul and houses the first digital IMAX theatre in Singapore. Shaw Theatres nex, the company’s first new multiplex in more than a decade, opened in December 2010 with the introduction of premiere, a premium cinema-going experience in a suburban district.

Further developments are on the horizon. The company is currently working on its next multiplex at Waterway Point in Punggol, which is slated for completion in 2014. Shaw Theatres, Waterway Point will feature Singapore’s third digital IMAX theatre!

Thus far, Shaw Theatres has seen a 35% increase in overall box office takings and is expecting Shaw Theatres JCube to further increase it’s revenue by another 15% over the next two years.

Mr. Christopher Shaw, Executive Vice President of Film Distribution, added: “With our new theatres and increased screen count, we will be able to accommodate a wider variety of films and screen more movie titles at any one time. We will continue to provide a good mix of films to our patrons from blockbusters to more eclectic art house films as well as everything in-between.”

About IMAX’s Digital Theatre System

The IMAX's Digital Theatre System offers the most immersive movie-going experience possible. For a start, IMAX’s projection technology delivers crystal-clear images. The dual projection system projects left-eye and right-eye images simultaneously thus eliminating depth distortion during fastmoving scenes.

IMAX’s audio system creates laser-aligned digital sound for accurate and realistic sound images with the largest dynamic range. This enables the sound to be crisp enough to hear a pin drop and precise enough to know exactly where it dropped! Then there is IMAX’s customised theatre geometry,

which maximises your field of view. The highgain screen results in exceptionally bright images and unparalleled 3D effect. The screen is also slightly curved and sits closer to the audience, creating a larger effective screen, which is equivalent to a 20% to 230% increased in screen area.
