19 January 2016, Singapore - Shaw Theatres Waterway Point at Punggol will open this Thursday (21 January 2016) and it will boast the most number of screens in a suburban location with 11 screens, including a digital IMAX theatre.
This is Shaw Theatres’ ninth location, and the fourth that the exhibitor has opened over the last six years and all in suburban districts – i.e. Shaw Theatres Seletar in Seletar (December 2014), Shaw Theatres JCube in Jurong East (April 2012), and Shaw Theatres nex in Serangoon Central (December 2010).
With the four new suburban cinemas, Shaw Theatres has more than doubled its total number of screens from 30 to 66, and increased the total number of seats from some 6,200 to over 10,600.
In the process, Shaw Theatres has also increased the number of digital IMAX screens to three, which allows it to deliver the world’s most immersive movie experience to even more local audience.
Mr. Mark Shaw, Executive Vice President of Operations, Shaw Theatres, said: “Our strategy of going to the heartlands and commitment to bringing the best movie experiences to our patrons, has paid off. We are confident that the demand for a premium movie-going experience will continue to rise in Singapore. For example, IMAX accounted for 75% of our first hour advance ticket sales for Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Our patrons can look forward to more Blockbusters released in IMAX like Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice (release on 24 March) and Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War (release on 28 April) which will feature select footage shot with IMAX cameras.”
Mr. Christopher Shaw, Executive Vice President of Film Distribution, added: “With a good distribution of screens in the city as well as in the heartlands, Shaw Theatres will be able to offer a greater variety of movie titles to our patrons. For this Chinese New Year, we will be releasing sequels to box office hits such as From Vegas to Macau III and The Monkey King 2, as well as local film such as Jack Neo’s Long Long Time Ago. Audiences who are looking for critically acclaimed and Academy Award nominated titles can also enjoy a variety of films like Room, The Revenant (also in IMAX) and Spotlight at our theatres. Our programming will ensure that Punggol is the one stop location for the best and latest big screen movie entertainment from Hollywood as well as around the world.”

Shaw Theatres, part of the Shaw Organisation, was founded by the Shaw Brothers and has been operating cinemas in Singapore since 1927. With Shaw Theatres Waterway Point, it now owns eight cineplexes across the island,
They also feature the latest in cinema technologies like IMAX, Dolby 7.1 Surround and RealD 3D systems. Shaw Theatres also manages a ninth cineplex, Century Cineplex, which is privately owned.
The IMAX's Digital Theatre System offers the most immersive movie-going experience possible. For a start, IMAX’s projection technology delivers crystal-clear images. The dual projection system projects left-eye and right-eye images simultaneously thus eliminating depth distortion during fastmoving scenes.
IMAX’s audio system creates laser-aligned digital sound for accurate and realistic sound images with the largest dynamic range. This enables the sound to be crisp enough to hear a pin drop and precise enough to know exactly where it dropped! Then there is IMAX’s customised theatre geometry, which maximises your field of view.
The highgain screen results in exceptionally bright images and unparalleled 3D effect. The screen is also slightly curved and sits closer to the audience, creating a larger effective screen, which is equivalent to a 20% to 230% increased in screen area.
